The $2,500 award, which is conferred to early or mid-career faculty members who have made outstanding research contributions, was established in 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Mathematics.

The award is based on the quality of a candidate’s research over the past five years or for an influential paper published within the past five years as assessed through its quality and impact.

“Congratulations to Dan,” said Mark Giesbrecht, Director of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science. “He has made many contributions to the field of human-computer interaction, in particular his research that seamlessly blends technical excellence with aesthetic beauty.”

Other 2018 Golden Jubilee Research Excellence Award winners are Professor Jason Bell from the Department of Pure Mathematics and Professor Luke Postle from the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization. They will receive their awards in the fall at the Faculty Reception.

Professor Vogel is a member of the Human-Computer Interaction Research Group, university-wide consortium of faculty and students whose research spans gesture-based interaction, surface computing, citizen science and crowdsourcing to software learning systems, mobile interaction, gaming and intelligent software systems.
