The David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science has joined the the National Center for Women & Information Technology as an academic affiliate. The National Centre for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), based out of the University of Colorado, is a non-profit community of more than 600 universities, companies, non-profits and government organizations working to increase women's participation in computing and technology. NCWIT equips change leaders with resources for taking action in recruiting, retaining and advancing women from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and higher education through industry and entrepreneurial careers.

"By joining, we gain access to their literature and expertise in best practices for recruiting and retaining women in computing," explained director of Women in Computer Science, Jo Atlee. "It gives us greater opportunities to learn from and work with peer institutions who are also actively working to increase the participation of women in computing and technology." Atlee was appointed as director of Women in Computer Science in August.

In May, the University of Waterloo accepted the United Nations' invitation to take part in the HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 framework that aims to achieve long-term and sustainable gender equity. The University has committed to increasing female student participation in STEM experiences, enhancing female faculty representation, and attracting and advance women in senior positions.
