University of Waterloo Computer Science ranked #1 in Canada by U.S. news and world global university rankings

The David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science has been ranked #1 in Canada by U.S. News' Global University Rankings.

This ranking sees Waterloo's Computer Science program move up from 19th globally, to 18th. The Cheriton School of Computer Science has continuously placed in the top 20 subject-area rankings.

"The recent subject ranking of Computer Science at Waterloo as #1 and in Canada and #18 in the world, is a strong endorsement of the quality of research and education happening within the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science," said Director Mark Giesbrecht. "As the largest concentration of academic computer science researchers in Canada, our faculty members and graduate students are consistently publishing transformational research that is integrated into the everyday lives of Canadians. From cybersecurity and privacy and data science, to fundamental innovations in machine learning and algorithms, researchers in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science are changing the science, technology and application of computing. This ranking is a recognition we are proud of, and foresee continued expansion of our research impact into the future."

These subject-based rankings are based on Thomson Reuters’ essential science indicators subject categories, which reflect journal classifications. All of the indicators from the global universities ranking are used for the subject-based rankings except number of PhDs awarded and number of PhDs awarded per staff member.
