Information for

Clubs and campus activities

Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet new people, explore your interests, take a break from academics, and have fun.

As activities happen on campus all year round, there are endless opportunities for you to find your niche and socialize with others!

Choose from more than 300 clubs

Whether you're interested in food, politics, dance, business, gaming, or the environment, joining one of our student clubs is the perfect way to find something you love and meet others who share that same passion.

And if there isn't a club that matches your interests, you can gather a group of friends and start your own with the help of our student government.

On-campus activities

Ever wonder what it'd be like if there was a zombie apocalypse? No need to wonder anymore! The Waterloo Science Fiction and Fantasy Club hosts a popular campus-wide game of Humans vs. Zombies that lasts 24 hours a day for 5 days.

The Bombshelter Pub is the place to be – especially on Wednesdays! Dance it out to your favourite music, have great food and drinks – all right on campus.

With themed events like Beyoncé night, Thursday Trivia, and Wing Night Friday, you'll have a new experience every week!

It's no surprise that a university like Waterloo focused on ideas is part of the global TEDx movement. TEDxUW provides the opportunity for you and other students to come together, share ideas, and be inspired to think differently about the world.

Take part in Canada's largest hackathon, Hack the North. More than 1,000 students from around the world come to Waterloo to experiment, connect, and create.

Prime ministers, astronauts, and more

You'll also be able to join in on special lectures hosted at Waterloo. Previous guests include

  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
  • astronaut Chris Hadfield
  • Reddit co-founder Alex Ohanian
  • physicist Stephen Hawking

Experience special events that happen on campus and are exclusive to you.

Welcome Week happens each term to celebrate students' return to campus. Enjoy free breakfast and activities like movie marathons, rides at a welcome week carnival, or free concerts.

Student government

Were you involved in student council in high school? Then you may want to check out the Federation of Students (FEDS), owned and operated by Waterloo students. The FEDS operate businesses, student services, and clubs along with Orientation and other special events.

As well, most programs have a student society of their own – a great way to meet upper-year students in your program.

Dining

With 28 on-campus eateries, you'll have a large selection of food items to choose from such as burritos, quinoa bowls, and smoothies at Frsh, all-day breakfast at Modern Language's Diner, and make your own pho at South Side Marketplace.

Our residence cafeterias offer many different food stations all in one spot, including crispy chicken wraps – a student favourite. You do not need to be living in residence to enjoy a meal here.

If you have special dietary needs, speak to one of our residence chefs to ensure that we are effectively accommodating you. You can even bring in your own recipe and we'll try to incorporate that into our menu.

On campus, there are also a number of franchises that you're likely accustomed to, Pita Pit, Pizza Pizza, Teriyaki Experience, Wild Olive Pasta Bar, Booster Juice, and more.

Looking for a caffeine fix?

You're never far from a coffee shop with 34 different locations including Tim Hortons, Starbucks, William's, and other cafés that offer our house-blended coffee. Follow Food Services on Twitter to learn more about eating on campus.
