Abstract: Our research is focused on understanding the implications of childhood shyness for social and emotional development. I will present findings from our cross-sectional and longitudinal studies to illustrate how shyness influences attention, information processing, and social behaviour across childhood. Findings will be discussed in terms of transactional models of development in which early temperament shapes both the quantity and quality of children’s social experiences.
