Applied Mathematics Graduate student wins (another) teaching award

Applied Mathematics PhD candidate Alex Shum has been selected as one
of the recipients of the 2013 Amit & Meena Chakma Award for Exceptional
Teaching by a Student. The award is given "in recognition of excellence
in teaching of all kinds by registered students". More details can

Applied Mathematics Graduate student wins teaching award

Applied Mathematics PhD candidate Alex Shum has won the first
Feds Teaching Award. This award comes from the Federation of Students,
the undergraduate student society at the University of Waterloo.

Applied Mathematics Graduate student wins faculty 3-minute thesis competition

Applied Mathematics PhD candidate Robert Jonsson won the Faculty of Mathematics 3-minute thesis competition held on March 1, 2013, with his talk titled "Relativistic Quantum Information". Robert will be one of two representatives of the Faculty at the University-wide competition, to be held on March 27, 2013.

Applied Mathematics Graduate student participates in conversation with Chris Hadfield

Applied Mathematics PhD candidate Nancy Soontiens was one of the University of Waterloo students chosen to ask a question of astronaut Chris Hadfield during a live downlink between the International Space Station and the university on Friday, February 15. Nancy asked for advice for aspiring astronauts.  Commander Hadfield's response: get an advanced degree, be in good physical condition and show that you have the ability to make good decisions when consequences matter. The entire event can be viewed below.
