On Septemer 3rd, an exceptional new cohort of Faculty of Arts graduate students assembled for graduate orientation to kick start their graduate degrees. The buzz in the room was palpable—hard work, dedication, and chasing down professors for graduate school references had led to this point: the first day of graduate school. Students chatted about their academic pasts, their research interests, and their hopes for the future while they waited for their scheduled programming to commence.

Students received a warm welcome from the Faculty of Arts’ Associate Dean, Graduate Studies Linda Warley, who outlined her expectations for all Arts graduate students. She walked students through the Academic Integrity workshop, explaining proper citation practices, common academic integrity offences, and emphasizing the importance of checking their work.

Presentations were given on a wide variety of topics including GradVenture, a “one-stop-shop” for graduate resources, workshops and special events, and the Centre for Career Action where students can book appointments with staff members to help plan for academic and non-academic careers. The Office of Research presented on the essentials when conducting research, including receiving the proper ethics clearance.

Linda concluded the orientations session by emphasizing the importance of adhering to deadlines, completing graduate studies within the required timeframe, asking for help and clarification when needed, and prioritizing mental health and wellness throughout the educational journey.

Welcome 2019 Arts graduate students! We are excited to have you, and we can't wait to see what you accomplish during your time here!
