With this award and many other honours (such as being named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada), Professor Walker is recognized for his trailblazing work to advance scholarship, education and action dedicated to black history and human rights in Canada.
The Olivier le Jeune Trailblazer Award was granted in particular recognition of Professor Walker's work in creating the very first Canadian university courses in African-Canadian history at both the undergraduate and graduate level, which he did here at the University of Waterloo during the early 1970s.
