Catherine Black, recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award, 1994

French, Non-regular award category

Catherine Black has been teaching part-time in the French department since 1986. Her dedication, vitality and genuine interest in her students make her a great asset to the French department and the University as a whole. In addition to teaching a variety of french language courses, Catherine has developed innovative teaching techniques including a new course Fr. 208D, Teaching the French Language Through Drama. Catherine has been described by students as a dedicated teacher, who spends a great deal of time outside the classroom in order to help students realize course objectives. In spite of her high standards, students respond most favourably to the level of excellence which she expects them to achieve. As one of her former students commented, “Catherine not only taught lessons to relay material to us but she instilled in us a learning attitude. We were in fact required to be cultured.”
