David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science
The Cheriton School of Computer Science is named for David R. Cheriton, who earned his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo in 1978. In 2005, Professor Cheriton made a transformational gift to the school that supports named chairs, faculty fellowships, and graduate scholarships.

Chengnian Sun and Hongyang Zhang receive Google Research Scholar Program funding
Professors Chengnian Sun and Hongyang Zhang have each been awarded $60,000 USD through the 2025 Google Research Scholar Program.
Professor Sun’s project will focus on enhancing compiler optimizations, while Professor Zhang’s project aims to improve the speed and efficiency of reasoning in large language models.
Aseem Baranwal receives 2025 Cheriton Distinguished Dissertation Award
PhD graduate Aseem Baranwal has received the 2025 Cheriton Distinguished Dissertation Award. Established in 2019, the annual award recognizes outstanding doctoral research at the Cheriton School of Computer Science and includes a $1,000 prize.
Matthew Regehr awarded 2025 CPI Graduate Excellence Scholarship
PhD candidate Matthew Regehr has received a Graduate Excellence Scholarship from Waterloo’s Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute. Sponsored generously by BTQ, Matthew will receive $10,000.
