Akshay Ramachandran has received two awards for his doctoral research — the 2022 Cheriton Distinguished Dissertation Award as well as second place in the 2022 Mathematics Doctoral Prize for his thesis titled “Geodesic convex analysis of group scaling for the Paulsen problem and tensor normal model.”

Float, a company that offers corporate credit card and accounting services and was co-founded by Cheriton School of Computer Science alums Griffin Keglevich and Ruslan Nikolaev, has been named among the 2022 C100 Fellows. 

Computer science remains the University of Waterloo’s top-ranked subject internationally, coming in at 25th among the world’s top universities, according to the latest edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject released on April 6, 2022.

Dr. Mazen Melibari, Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at Umm Al-Qura University in Saudi Arabia, has been recognized by MIT Technology Review (Arabic version) as among the 30 most prominent experts in artificial intelligence in the Arab world for the year 2022.

Dr. Melibari obtained his PhD in computer science in 2016 at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Cheriton School of Computer Science Professors Pascal Poupart and Edward Lank.

Erik Demaine (CS PhD 2001) and a team of researchers, including his father, have published a proof on a geometric problem involving infinite folds — that any finite polyhedral manifold in three dimensions can be continuously flattened into two dimensions while preserving intrinsic distances and avoiding crossings.

When Bilal Akhtar graduated from Waterloo’s software engineering program in 2019 he saw a bright future ahead. Not only had he landed a dream job at Cockroach Labs, a database company where he interned during his undergraduate degree, but he also led the company’s expansion to create a Toronto-based office.

Professors Daniel Vogel and Jian Zhao are among a select group of researchers across Canada who are recipients of unrestricted funding from Reality Labs Research. 

We are saddened to announce that Robert Angus “Gus” German — one of the original “WATFOR kids” — passed away on March 12, 2022 at age 79.

Gus is remembered by friends and colleagues in the Cheriton School of Computer Science and the Faculty of Mathematics as one of the pioneers who helped establish the university’s reputation as a leader in computer science in the 1960s.

We are saddened to announce that our dear friend, mentor and colleague Edward Lank, Professor at the Cheriton School of Computer Science, passed away on March 21, 2022 at the age of 49.
