The Faculty Association of the University of Waterloo’s Equity Committee has awarded a 2018 Equity and Inclusivity Award to Women in Computer Science — a group of dedicated undergrad students, graduate students and faculty members that promotes women who are interested in studying computer science and who are pursuing careers in computing.

The following is excerpted from an article by Simona Chiose, published in the Globe and Mail on April 16, 2018

When Joanne Atlee was an undergraduate student in computer science, more than a third of her class was made up of women. In graduate school, those ranks began to thin out, a decline that has continued through much of her career as a professor at the University of Waterloo. 

“All of a sudden I am an instructor at Waterloo and 10 per cent of the class is female and it’s ‘Oh no, what happened?’”

Professor M. Tamer Özsu, a founding member of the Data Systems Group at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, has been named a University Professor by the University of Waterloo, a distinction conferred to academics of exceptional scholarly achievement and international pre-eminence.

The Obelisk has named Research Professor Maura Grossman as one of the top six women in law worldwide who is transforming the legal industry through technology.

Xu Chu successfully defended his PhD in August 2017. He was supervised by Professor Ihab Ilyas, a member of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science’s Data Systems Group.

A trio of computer science students from the University of Waterloo were among the top programmers from 128 universities across six continents invited to battle it out in Rapid City, South Dakota on May 24, 2017 at the 41^st Annual ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals.

First year Computer Science student Joyce Yang has been awarded a $12,000 HeForShe scholarship. Yang is among five other students entering STEM disciplines this September.

David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science professor Joanne Atlee has been appointed as the first director of Women in Computer Science. A long time advocate of supporting women in computer science, Atlee explains that she is happy to take on the role and continue pushing for women to feel comfortable and confident in the field.

Ahmed E. Hassan, an alumnus of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, has been named CACS/AIC Outstanding Young Computer Science Researcher for 2014.

Urs Hengartner, an associate professor in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, was quoted in a CBC News Go Public investigation regarding sequencing fraud and credit card security.
