The Schulich Leader Scholarships are a national undergraduate science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) scholarship, established by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich to encourage the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators. This year, the Schulich Foundation is celebrating their tenth anniversary, and in 2021 they’ve awarded up to 100 scholarships to students across Canada entering university. Since 2012, the University of Waterloo has ranked as the top recipient with the largest number of qualifying applicants.

This September, we are happy to welcome over 1200 first year students to our science community, as well as our many second year students who may also be coming to campus for the first time!

We know that coming to university can be stressful or a big change for some students, so to alleviate some of that stress, we’ve collected a few useful links to help you get started navigating our campus and resources.

In July 1965, Herbert Fernando, his professor wife Aggie and their two children – which quickly became three – departed Sri Lanka to embark on a new life in Waterloo.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit and courses shifted to the online environment, Professor John Johnston from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences faced a monumental task. 

As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual learning has necessarily become an integral part of the day-to-day life of students, faculty, and staff at the University of Waterloo. One of the challenges often associated with online learning is creating active engagements between students and instructors, especially with hands on learning opportunities such as with labs.  

This afternoon, Bob Lemieux, Dean of Science celebrated the amazing faculty and staff of the Faculty of Science that have received awards for teaching and research in the last four years (2018-2021), in addition to introducing the new faculty members, as well as recognizing faculty and staff who have retired since June 2018. 

Lisa Christian, associate clinical professor in the School of Optometry and Vision Science and Brenda Lee, lecturer in the Department of Physics and Astronomy have been awarded the Faculty of Science's 2021 Excellence in Science Teaching Awards in recognition of their innovative and engaging teaching methods. 

With the transition this year to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been important to develop new strategies to teach courses in an online environment. Dr. Christian and Professor Lee have both showed a willingness to not only adapt but find new and innovative ways of using technology to connect with their students virtually.
