The University of Waterloo is pleased to announce over $1 million in funding through Round 2.0 of the Global Futures Fund’s Scale and Leverage grant streams - and two of the three projects are led or co-led by Arts Faculty, including:

  • Scaling Waterloo.AI: Strategic Research Clusters and the Bridge Program for Global Impact (Scale grant) led by cross-faculty collaborators Stephen L. Smith (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Marcel O'Gorman (English), organizes the talent of The Waterloo Data and Artificial Intelligence Institute into four research clusters in AI and connects them by a Bridge Program which funds Micro-Internships and Fellowships for problem-driven engagements and showcases.
  • TRuST and Innovation: A Collaborative Exchange for Infrastructures of Trust from Insight to Impact (Leverage grant), led by Lai-Tze Fan (Sociology), which enables the growth of the TRuST Network through cross-sectoral exchange, student engagement, and building new frameworks of trust in innovation.

This decision follows adjudication by the GFF Steering Committee and approval from Deans’ Council.

The Global Futures Fund (GFF) aims to catalyze and support a wide range of initiatives that advance the vision of Waterloo’s five interconnected Global Futures: Societal, Health, Sustainable, Technological, and Economic. GFF Scale grants offer up to $500,000 over three years to support the growth of activities within an existing initiative or unit for greater scale and impact. GFF Leverage grants offer up to $200,000 over two years to support the development of a new activity/project as part of an existing initiative.

Congratulations to the grant recipients!
