Planning for Student Resistance to Instructional Innovations (CTE7018)

Monday, October 16, 2023 10:00 am - 11:30 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

Location: MC 2036

Facilitator: Donna Ellis and Mary Power

Description

When instructors decide to innovate in their teaching, some students love it, but others can actively resist. Various learning-centred pedagogical approaches can elicit this negative response, be it use of a flipped classroom model, extensive use of groupwork, or unconventional assessment approaches like ungrading. Anything that’s new or unexpected for students based on their past educational experiences can result in a negative response from at least some students, and when resistance occurs, it can be deflating and even damaging for instructors.

In this workshop, we will explore elements of resistance and a change management theory that helps to explain it. Based on this theory, we will share various strategies to help limit student resistance to instructional innovations and seek examples and experiences from participants to generate a more fulsome set of strategies.
