Tech-Enabled Peer Teaching: A case study of Chrysalis - In Person

Friday, January 30, 2026 10:00 am - 11:30 am EST (GMT -05:00)

Location: In-person, LIB 329 (EdTech Sandbox)

Facilitators: Rebecca MacAlpine, Pascal Poupart and Prashanth Arun

Description

Facilitating peer-to-peer teaching is a valuable part of the student learning experience (e.g., Wagner & Gansemer-Topf, 2005; Cohen, et al., 1982; Fiorella & Mayer, 2013). This workshop will introduce instructors to the theory behind learning by teaching and demonstrate how Chrysalis, a large language model developed at the University of Waterloo that encourages learning by teaching, can provide a digitally enabled version of this model that is further enhanced by putting students in the driver’s seat. Instructors will have the opportunity to complete a practice Chrysalis assignment, as well as discuss the ways in which Chrysalis can be employed in the classroom. The learning outcomes for this session will be as follows:

  • Articulate the benefits and limitations of tutoring in the learning process.

  • Explore how Chrysalis applies theories of peer tutoring for student knowledge development.

  • Test Chrysalis as a student learner and structure a Chrysalis assignment to assess student knowledge.

  • Discuss ways in which Chrysalis can be employed in the University classroom.

Please bring a laptop to the workshop.
