Institutional Teaching Culture Perception Survey

What is the Institutional Teaching Culture Perception Survey?

This research study aims to assess instructors’, staff members’, and students’ perceptions of how teaching is valued at their universities.  The research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and is being conducted by Western University, Queen’s University, McMaster University, University of Windsor, Ryerson University, Wilfrid Laurier University, Brock University, and University of Calgary. The survey instruments developed through this project are intended to be used as tools to assess institutional teaching culture over time.

How do I access the survey?

Check your email for an invitation to participate, which will include the link to the survey. If you require the link to be re-sent, please email cteproj1@uwaterloo.ca.

What does participation involve?

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to complete a 20-minute survey anonymously. Participation is voluntary. You may decline to answer any questions that you do not wish to answer and you can withdraw your participation at any time by not submitting your responses.  There are no known or anticipated risks from participating in this study. Your decision regarding participation will not affect your academic standing or position as a University of Waterloo employee. Upon completion of the survey, undergraduate and graduate students will be invited to participate in a draw for 1 of 2 $400 awards (see below for more details).

Any information you provide will be confidential. All data will be summarized and no individual will be identifiable from the summarized results. Furthermore, the website is programmed to collect responses alone and will not collect any information that could potentially identify you (such as machine identifiers). Completion and submission of the online survey indicates your consent to participate.

The data, with no personal identifiers, collected from this study will be maintained on a password-protected computer database in a restricted access area of the university. As well, the data will be electronically archived and maintained for seven years.

How do students enter the draw for a $400 award?

In appreciation of their time, students can enter a draw to win 1 of 2 $400 awards. Your odds of winning one of the prizes are based on the number of individuals who participate in the study.

Eligibility:

Student participants that submit their responses to the Institutional Teaching Culture Perception Survey can enter into a random draw for 1 of 2 $400 awards. Eligibility for the draw opens on November 7th at 8:30am and closes on December 5th at 11:59pm.

To enter the draw, students will be asked to provide your name and contact information at the end of the survey. Any contact information collected for the draw will remain confidential. It will be stored separately and deleted once the draw is complete.

If a student that receives an invitation to participate in the survey does not participate and would like to be included in the draw, please send your name, email and University of Waterloo Student ID to cteproj1@uwaterloo.ca between November 7th at 8:30am and December 5th at 11:59pm. By entering the contest and voluntarily providing personal information including name, email and student ID, you are granting us permission to collect and use the information for the purpose of administering the contest and selecting the winner.

Right to Disqualify:

The University reserves the right to disqualify any entry not conforming to these Rules and Regulations at any time. The University assumes no responsibility for entry fraud committed by an entrant and reserves the right to demand return of the prize and all costs associated with remedying any prize awarded to an ineligible entry or entrant.

Winner Selection:

The winners of the $400 awards will be selected in a random draw from eligible entries the week of December 5. Your odds of winning one of the $400 awards will depend on the number of individuals that enter into the draw. The award winner will be contacted by the Centre for Teaching Excellence within five business days of the draw by email. Please note that to receive one of the $400 awards, the selected entrant must correctly answer a time-limited skill-testing mathematical question.
