Jason Niles, recipient of the Amit and Meena Chakma Award for Exceptional Teaching by a Student, 2003

Planning

Jason Niles is a fourth-year planning student at the University of Waterloo. In the Fall 2002 term, Jason held a position of Teaching Assistant for ENVS 201 - Introduction to Environmental Law. His dedication to teaching is best reflected by the overwhelming support of his students.
Jason's commitment to the course was "phenomenal". He "attended the weekly lecture in addition to the tutorials he led", and "produced accurate, detailed, and all-encompassing, fill-in-the-blank summary sheets for students' use". His continuous effort and dedication increased the efficiency of the students' understanding of the materials. As one student puts it "Jason was always prepared" and he used different methods to deliver the information to the students in the best way possible. His "knowledge of ENVS 201 proved to be a crucial asset to the class as many of us relied on his answers for our complete understanding." His availability extended beyond regular hours and he offered his support to students through emails that were always answered promptly. As one student said "never before have I seen such a large effort put forth by any teaching assistant".
