Teaching Online: Design, Development, and Delivery (CTE 762)

Thursday, March 3, 2016 1:15 pm - 2:45 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Location: EV1 241 Notes: Open to faculty (registration is required)

Description: Are you considering developing or teaching an online course? Would you like to know more about online learning at UW? Over 40,000 students take online courses at the University of Waterloo every year, including some who pursue entire undergraduate or graduate degrees completely online. Online learning and teaching presents both opportunities and challenges; in this session we’ll outline some of the hurdles you’ll face both in developing and in teaching your online course, as well as ways to overcome these challenges. We’ll present data about online learning in general, and about UWaterloo students and courses in particular, and discuss what this means for you and your course. We’ll focus on how instructional strategies can be adapted for use in the online environment, and discuss why some things that are successful in the classroom are better achieved using different techniques online.

Learning Outcomes: After the session, participants will be able to:

  • describe the design and development process of an online course at UWaterloo
  • identify some ways in which teaching online differs from teaching in the classroom, both in terms of opportunities and constraints
  • explain strategies to overcome the challenges of teaching online
  • outline strategies to engage students in learning online
  • identify ways in which to maintain and enhance instructor presence in the online environment
  • recognize the importance of alignment of learning outcomes, online activities and assignments
