Vincent Hui, distinguished teaching by a registered student award recipient, 2002

School of Architecture

Vincent Hui, a graduate student pursuing a Masters of Architecture degree, came to Waterloo as an undergraduate in 1996.  Vincent is an energetic student and eager to assist other students in their pursuit of knowledge.  In the Fall 2001 term, Vincent was the teaching assistant for ARCH 172 (Building Construction l) and ARCH 173 (Building Construction 2).  A colleague reports that “Vincent knows each student by name and can identify their strengths, weaknesses, problems and potentials – on an individual basis.”  He is available to the students beyond normal office hours to assist with their projects, assignments and problems.   In the current term, Vincent is an assistant in the first year Design Studio.  In the past, he has also held the position of President of the Architecture Student Association.  As an undergraduate, he held TA positions throughout his third and fourth years.  Another colleague states that Vincent “is not attached only to the strong students, but is particularly effective as a teacher of and an advocate for students who are not the academic or creative leaders.”  Students praise him, saying “Quick with solid advice for both the academic world and beyond, Vince has helped to create a better sense of community both within our class and also within the entire School of Architecture.”

Vincent is a participant in the Certificate for University Teaching.  The Certificate program is offered jointly by the Teaching Resources and Continuing Education (TRACE) Office and the Graduate Studies Office.
