Cary Bissonnette, recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award, 2005

Chemistry

Since joining the University of Waterloo in 1995 as a lecturer in chemistry, Dr. Carey Bissonnette has demonstrated both his dedication to excellence in the teaching of chemistry at all levels and his empathy towards students and their problems. He conveys his enthusiasm for chemistry to students in part via lectures that are well organized, inspiring, and challenging, yet presented in a manner that is both friendly and disarming, and in part by one-on-one discussions with students outside the classroom. His lectures always draw full rooms, and student evaluations of his teaching have been consistently excellent. Carey's contributions to education go beyond the classroom. He has been responsible for both the Avogadro High School Chemistry Exam and the Chem 13 News Exams written by scores of high school students, and he has served as an accuracy reviewer for Grade 11 and Grade 12 Ontario chemistry textbooks. Such activities influence the education of many of the Ontario students who proceed to university.
