Harshina Brijlall (she/her) is a PhD candidate in the Department of Biology. In 2021, she graduated with a Master of Biotechnology from the University of Guelph. She also received a BSc in Biology and a BEd from the University of Saskatchewan. Before graduate school, Harshina taught K-12 science in northern and central Saskatchewan.
Harshina's PhD project uses genome sequencing to understand potential toxin-producing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in Canadian lakes. She aims to refine sampling protocols to monitor and manage harmful algal blooms in forested watersheds and improve drinking water quality.
Harshina has completed the Fundamentals of University Teaching program and is working towards the Certificate in University Teaching certificate. She has been a teaching assistant for a variety of undergraduate biology courses. She is passionate about inclusivity and diversity in STEM education and hopes to create educational tools and resources to inspire young scientists.
