Joan Kaburia

Joan is a PhD student in Geography at the Faculty of Environment. She holds a Master of Science in environmental health and is passionate about global health equity. Her doctoral research explores how power structures different dimensions of food security and how people of different ages use agency to influence their food environments and food and nutrition security. Joan completed the Fundamentals of University Teaching in 2024 and the Certificate in University Teaching in 2025. She has held multiple teaching assistant roles at the University of Waterloo and has been involved in designing and facilitating workshops with communities and different stakeholders.

She describes herself as a curious and lifelong learner who approaches teaching as a relational process of knowledge mobilization and exchange. In her pedagogical practice, she centres values of diversity, belonging, and inclusive engagement, fostering learning environments that are collaborative and grounded in equity.
