Richard H. Holmes, recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award, 1995

Philosophy

Richard Holmes has been a member of the Department of Philosophy since 1968. Unlike his namesake Sherlock, who had a knack for keeping knowledge to himself and then spilling it on the unsuspecting all at once, Richard Holmes is a constant and gentle companion to students in the great adventure called learning. To them he is a co-investigator rather than an old-style authority; an open caring guide rather than an old-fashioned judge. One of those students said it all: “his course,” she wrote, “makes waking up and going to class seem like an honour, rather than a chore.” Richard Holmes is a wise friend and mentor to his students, to this colleagues and even to the dean of arts.
