Using SLICC Workbooks
Using a PebblePad workbook, students document their progress on these 5 Learning outcomes: 1) analysis on how your understanding has grown in the context of your experience, 2) application of current skills needed to effectively engage in your experience, 3) recognizing and developing new skills that are needed for success in your experience, 4) recognizing and exploring your mindset towards growth and learning from challenges, and 5) evaluation and critical reflection on your learning and development throughout your SLICC, drawing on evidence from reflections that are recorded throughout the term.
This example illustrates how a student used the Student Led Individually Created Course (SLICC) self-directed learning framework to document their growth and development while working on their chosen project, “Validation and Testing the Clinician-reported Genetic testing Utility InDEx (C-GUIDE)TM in Neonatal Intensive Care)”.
Major Themes:
- Reflecting and reporting – Using the SLICC framework, students reflect regularly on their experiences, and submit an Interim and a Final Reflective Report about how they have addressed the SLICC learning outcomes.
- Feedback and assessment – Students receive formative academic feedback from their SLICC supervisor at the proposal stage, formative feedback on weekly reflections, and then a grade and feedback on their Final Reflective Report.
- Learning from challenges and setbacks – Students may not achieve everything they set out to do, however the SLICC reflective framework allows for this, enabling students to show how they have learnt from working on problems and even their mistakes, and demonstrating how they would approach things differently in the future.
The Five Learning Outcomes
Within their proposals, students personalize these 5 learning outcomes.
- LO1 Analysis: I will be able to demonstrate how my understanding of the defined context of my SLICC has developed throughout the experience.
- LO2 Application: I will be able to draw on and apply a range of relevant skills and attributes (academic, professional and/or personal) in order to engage effectively with my SLICC, identifying where I need to improve these and/or develop new ones.
- LO3 Recognizing and Developing Skills: I am able to demonstrate how I have used experiences during my SLICC to actively develop my skills in the focused area of… (choose one): For HLTH 474, you will choose one of the skills from UWaterloo's Future Ready Talent Framework
- LO4 – Recognizing and Developing Mindsets: I am able to demonstrate how I have used experiences during my SLICC to actively explore my mindset towards… (choose one): …self-starting and proactivity …positive outlook and perseverance …lifelong learning and long-term planning.
- LO5 Evaluation: I am able to evaluate and critically reflect upon my approach, my learning, and my development throughout my SLICC.
