Erroneous Match Results Message

Monday, March 4, 2019

As a result of user error, students who were not matched in the March 4 WaterlooWorks Main Round match received the 'Successful Match Results' message in error.

A retraction message and apology message is being sent to affected students. We apologize for the error.

A note from Ross Johnston, Executive Director, Co-operative Education:

Dear co-op students,

As you may have seen, yesterday, Co-op sent a message to students and employers on a recruiting term to say that they had all been matched successfully. This message was regrettably sent in error and we sought to remedy the situation promptly. A message intended to apologize for the communication error was sent after this situation arose. Subsequently, the explanation for the error unfortunately seemed to lack sincerity and the note was therefore not perceived as an apology.

I’d like to assure you that Co-op was indeed quite dismayed by the situation and sincerely regrets the confusion that the match message caused our students. The match message was purely, a human error. The brief apology note was written in haste to seek to remedy the confusion and as a result it unfortunately came across as lacking sincerity and for that, I sincerely apologise. Clearly, the situation overall was very regrettable and we are looking at ways to improve the process and communications should something similar arise in the future.

On behalf of everyone in Co-operative Education, I’d like to express that we are extremely sorry that this situation occurred.

Yours sincerely,
Ross Johnston
Executive Director, Co-operative Education
