Geospatial Data Science degree
Harness the power of geographic data
Over 80% of the world’s information has a location component to it. Geospatial Data Science combines computer science with geographic and environmental data analysis to devise data-driven solutions to complex problems.
Waterloo is a leader in this field, ranking #1 in Canada and #20 in the world for remote sensing (Academic Ranking of World Universities 2025).
Learn to use tools such as remote sensing, computer mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), GPS, and artificial intelligence to analyze geographic data, understand spatial data, and make meaningful decisions.
At the same time, you’ll also learn the fundamentals of software design from Waterloo’s computer science experts and have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and gain paid work experience in co-op.
Once you graduate, you’ll find no end of opportunities to put your skills to work. Help governments prepare for natural hazards such as floods. Track crime rates or the spread of disease. Map demographics for businesses, or develop transportation routes for municipalities. In this rapidly growing field, our grads are in high demand!
What courses will you take?
First-year courses
During your first year, you'll take foundational courses in geospatial data science and geography, environmental studies, English, and math.
In your upper years, about half of the classes you'll take will focus on geography and geomatics.

Co-op work-study sequence
Starting in second year, you'll normally alternate between school and work every four months, integrating your classroom learning with real-world experience. You can return to the same employer for a couple of work terms to gain greater knowledge and responsibility or work for different employers to get a broad range of experience.
Your first work term will be in the winter term of second year.

GIS technician
Turn data into maps to reveal patterns in everything from population growth to environmental change. Use specialized software and create visuals that make complex information easier to understand and act on. This role is a great fit if you enjoy combining technology with geography to tell meaningful stories through data.
Remote sensing specialist
Seeing the planet from above, opening up a powerful way to understand change at a global scale. Using satellite and drone imagery, you’ll track shifts in forests, weather systems, coastlines, and cities over time. This role is a strong fit if you’re interested in technology and want to play a part in monitoring and protecting the world through a big-picture lens.
Geospatial data scientist
Analyze large datasets including location information to uncover trends and insights. You would use coding, statistics, and mapping tools to solve problems in areas like climate change or urban development. This path is ideal if you like working with data at a deeper level.
Urban analytics specialist
Study how cities function using location-based data. You would help improve transportation systems, housing, and infrastructure by identifying trends and inefficiencies. This career connects data science with city planning.
Environmental data officer
Work with datasets related to air, water, and land to understand environmental conditions. You’ll be cleaning, analyzing, and interpreting data to support decision-making. If you enjoy working with numbers and environmental issues, this role is a great match.
Location intelligence strategist
Help businesses use geographic data to make smarter decisions, like where to open new stores or how to reach customers. This role combines mapping with business analytics, showing how geospatial skills apply beyond environmental work.
Disaster risk modeler
Use spatial data to assess risks from natural hazards like floods, wildfires, or earthquakes. You’ll support public safety by creating models and maps that help communities prepare and respond.
Mobility data engineer
Analyze traffic patterns and transportation systems using geospatial tools. You would help design more efficient and sustainable ways for people to move around cities. This role has a direct impact on everyday life.
Climate insights researcher
Study climate-related datasets to identify trends and predict future changes. You would support research and policy decisions related to climate action. This is a great option if you’re passionate about tackling climate change with data.
Smart city analyst
Work with data from sensors and infrastructure to improve how cities operate, you’ll analyze patterns in energy use, traffic, or public services. It’s a forward-looking career that blends technology with urban sustainability.
Geospatial software developer
Build tools and applications that work with location-based data. This role involves writing code to create mapping platforms, data visualization tools, or mobile apps. It’s ideal if you enjoy programming and creating digital solutions.
Natural resource data analyst
Analyze spatial data related to forests, water, or land use. You would support sustainable management by identifying trends and predicting future impacts. This is a great way to combine data science with environmental protection.
Public health GIS coordinator
Utilize mapping and spatial data to track health trends, like disease outbreaks or access to healthcare. You’ll help organizations understand how location affects health outcomes while supporting community well-being.
Geospatial consultant
Advise organizations on how to use spatial data and tools effectively. You would work on a variety of projects, from environmental assessments to business strategy. This role offers variety and the chance to solve different types of challenges.
Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) Analyst
Combine geospatial data science with artificial intelligence to solve complex real-world problems. You would use machine learning and spatial data to identify patterns, automate mapping processes, and make predictions about everything from environmental change to urban growth. This role is ideal if you're interested in emerging technologies and want to use advanced analytics to turn geographic data into powerful insights for decision-making.

- Any Grade 12 U English (minimum final grade of 70% is required)

A map to your future
Aujas was initially interested in Computer Science, but received an alternate offer of admission to Geospatial Data Science. He researched the program and knew immediately that it was for him.
