Arts alumnus and lawyer John Webster (BA ‘87, Philosophy) shares how to live a balanced life, prioritize mental, physical and intellectual health, and be optimistic.
John's message: I wish I knew in my university days what finally dawned on me in my 50s, well into my career. I missed so many opportunities over the decades. I thought of mental health as being free from things like stress and anxiety. I thought of happiness as an intellectual pursuit, transcending my body. I lived in an ivory tower. I now see how important physical health and fitness is to wellness and mental health. I see other important categories of wellness that affect my mental health.
In this Office Hour, John talked about how he came to appreciate different areas of wellness and found a practical way to find balance between them.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
