Kristiina Lahde uses elegant conceptual systems to make sculptural constructions, collages, and photographs. In Extraordinary Measures, she turns her attention to tools for measurement by systematically reformatting a series of readymade measuring devices. Vintage yard sticks, cloth measuring tapes, and rulers are diseassembled and reconstructed. In reconfiguring these common measuring devices, she removes their function and suspends the ability to demarcate linear units of measure. By breaking these empirical conventions, the artist invites us to imagine data, space, and distance differently.

The exhibitions run from January 10 to March 2, 2019.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
