Active Learning Online Part 1 (CTE8001)Export this event to calendar

Monday, August 17, 2020 — 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM EDT

Location: Online (LEARN Site)

Host: This event is co-hosted with the Centre for Teaching Excellence and the Centre for Extended Learning

Description

Active Learning Online Part 1 helps instructors design and develop online teaching activities that encourage students’ engagement with course content. Instructors will explore and experiment with educational technologies that support active learning online, both within and beyond LEARN.

Please note: Part 1 is a pre-requisite for Part 2

A live, 2-hour synchronous session will occur on Monday, August 17th at 1:00 p.m.

Prior to the workshop, participants will be invited to complete preparatory activities asynchronously:

  • watch a (>20 min) video review of active learning (What is it? Why is it important? How does it fit in with overall course design?) by their workshop facilitators; and
  • examine their intended learning outcomes (ILOs) to consider which ones would be best supported by active learning online.

The 2-hour synchronous session takes the form of a guided tour of active learning online tools. It begins in the Virtual Classroom in LEARN and facilitators and participants travel as a group to complete small, interactive tasks as students using the following tools:

  • Perusall
  • Piazza
  • Quizlet
  • Bongo Video Assignment
  • Padlet

The workshop concludes with participants sharing their experiences in a synchronous discussion and both synchronously and asynchronously on Padlet. Participants will be given access to interactive resources highlighting important aspects of each of the tools, including how to re-create the activity they completed on the guided tour.

NB: Participants wishing to practice with these tools from the instructor perspective, as well as receive more formal guidance around designing and developing their own activities with these tools, will want to take Active Learning Online Part 2.
