Description:

Peer learning, “the use of teaching and learning strategies in which students learn with and from each other without the mediate intervention of a teacher”, supports a myriad of learning outcomes related to collaboration, teamwork, critical inquiry and reflection, communication skills, and metacognition (Boud et al 1995). Peer review and peer assessment are components of peer learning, whereby students consider and specify the level, value, or quality of a product or performance of other students, and are recognized as effective learning strategies that can lead to cognitive gains for both the students receiving feedback and the student assessors (Topping, 2005).  What role can students have in reviewing and assessing the value or quality of products or performance of other students in their class?  Would activities incorporating these strategies help students achieve the intended learning outcomes in your course? This session will examine the benefits and challenges of peer review and assessment and effective approaches for integrating peer review and assessment activities into courses.  Participants will have an opportunity to plan an activity for their students..
