Statements of Teaching Philosophy (CTE2196)

Saturday, February 1, 2025 8:30 am - Sunday, March 2, 2025 11:59 pm EST (GMT -05:00)
Location: Online (LEARN)
Facilitator: Kristin Brown (CTE)

Workshop description

Please note this module is considered an advanced offering. Hence, it is intended for participants who have TA'd a few times or taught a course.

Since most job candidates are asked to provide a "teaching statement" or a "statement of teaching philosophy" when applying for academic positions, it’s essential to understand what makes these documents effective. In this module, we’ll walk through the components of successful teaching statements and use reflection activities to help you brainstorm ideas for communicating your own teaching philosophy to hiring committees.

Time Commitment

Approximately 4-5 hours.

Module delivery

Structured Format: Please note that while this module is a self-paced, asynchronous offering, it will follow a structured schedule consisting of two deliverables: completion of the asynchronous module and draft of a statement of teaching philosophy (first two weeks of the month) and participation in peer review to give and receive feedback on the draft statements (second two weeks of the month). The content and expected effort are approximately equivalent to 4-5 hours, but spread over a longer timeframe so you can move at your own pace.

This online module may be started on February 1 and consists of:

  • a set of asynchronous, self-paced tasks in LEARN, that must be completed by the due date of Monday, February 17 by 11:59 p.m.
  • an asynchronous peer-review process in LEARN, that must be completed by the due date of Sunday, March 2 by 11:59 p.m.

Registration

  • Registration for this workshop will open in mid-January.

  • Participants will receive an attendance credit towards the Fundamentals program if they complete all of the required tasks in the module, including all the module activities.
  • Participants who do not complete all module activities by the due date will have their registration in the workshop cancelled, and will need to register again the following month.
