VR in the Arts and Humanities Classroom: A Practical Guide for Instructors (TIEL5030)

Thursday, February 25, 2027 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Location: In-person, Tech Sandbox (LIB 329)

Facilitators: Rebecca MacAlpine

Description

Part two of the EdTech Sandbox Training series, this one-hour, hands-on workshop introduces instructors to the Meta Quest 3 VR headsets and how virtual reality can support teaching and learning in the arts and humanities classroom. Participants will be oriented to the core functions of the headset (fit, comfort, navigation, safety settings, and basic troubleshooting) and review examples of teaching and learning activities that VR can enable—such as immersive simulations, virtual field trips, and spatial/3D visualization. The session also highlights practical considerations for classroom integration, including accessibility, motion sensitivity, space and supervision needs, and how to align VR activities with learning goals. The workshop concludes with guided free exploration time of low-cost or free VR software apps, giving participants an opportunity to try applications, experiment with the technology, and brainstorm ways VR might enhance the arts and humanities classroom curriculum.

Learning outcomes

  • Explain basic VR affordances and constraints for teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrate essential headset setup and navigation skills (e.g., fit/comfort adjustments, launching an app, using controllers, and accessing safety boundaries) to participate in a VR learning activity.
  • Assess potential VR use cases for the arts and humanities classroom, considering alignment to learning goals, learner experience (including accessibility and motion sensitivity), and logistical factors (space, supervision, time, and device management).
