Location: EV1 242

Description: Please join us for two interactive presentations by PhD candidates taking part in the Certificate in University Teaching program. This presentations will cover topics that will be of special interest to graduate students in STEM fields.

The presentation topics include:

Math Anxiety: Causes, Effects, and Treatments, Alexander Howse

This presentation will explore the concept of math anxiety: the negative feelings and reactions certain individuals exhibit when faced with performing mathematical tasks. Such reactions can lead to math avoidance behaviours which can negatively impact students' higher education and career prospects.  The presentation will discuss what groups are most likely to exhibit math anxiety, its possible causes, short and long term effects, and ways for the instructor and for students to reduce math anxiety.

Using Problem-based Learning (PBL) in Chemistry, Fatemeh Mousavi

In this workshop, we will discuss the philosophy and methodology of the instructional approach known as problem-based learning (PBL) and its advantages and disadvantages compared to the traditional teaching methods. This session will present examples of PBL activities from different research studies and investigate how this method can facilitate student learning, enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and promote communication skills.

Notes:
  • Participants will receive an attendance credit if they arrive on time and stay until the end of the event.
  • A maximum of one special topic workshops can be counted towards your Fundamentals certificate.
