CTE Teaching Tips

CTE has developed an extensive collection of more than 150 Teaching Tips: that is, succinct documents that describe evidence-based ideas and strategies for effective teaching and learning. New instructors will find the tips helpful for answering many of the questions and concerns that arise when teaching in a university setting for the first time. Seasoned instructors can also use the tips to obtain new ideas and learn different approaches.

In the search box on this page, you can search for specific terms or browse various categories of Teaching Tips.

In 2024, CTE Teaching Tips received just over 1 million page views from visitors around the world. Our five most popular Teaching Tips are consistently the following:

  1. Effective Communication: Barriers and Strategies
  2. Receiving and Giving Effective Feedback
  3. Exam Questions: Types, Characteristics, and Suggestions
  4. Bloom's Taxonomy
  5. Designing Multiple-Choice Questions

In the spirit of transparency and acknowledging the reality of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in our day-to-day work, please note that the Teaching Tips are written and revised by humans with pedagogical expertise. The Teaching Tip summaries and select image captions were, and will continue to be, generated by GenAI to improve searchability and accessibility. We always vet and modify the outputs, as needed, to ensure accuracy.
