Minimum Wage Changes October 1, 2021

The minimum wage rates in Ontario are increasing on October 1, 2021 as summarized in the following table:

Minimum wage rate Current wage rate Effective October 1, 2021
General minimum wage – applies to most employees $14.25 per hour $14.35 per hour
Student minimum wage – applies to students under the age of 18 who work 28 hours a week or less when school is in session, or work during a school break or summer holidays $13.40 per hour $13.50 per hour
Liquor servers minimum wage – applies to employees who serve liquor directly to customers or guests in licensed premises as a regular part of their work $12.45 per hour $12.55 per hour

What is happening?

On May 1st of each year, the contracts that cover the University of Waterloo’s extended health, dental, long-term disability, and life insurance benefits are subject to a rate renewal. Pension contribution rates are not subject to an annual renewal, but changes are required through time. Where applicable, new rates are applied, and employee deductions processed. Participation in the University of Waterloo pension and benefits is mandatory for all eligible employees.

New Community of Practice launched!

The Office of the Associate Provost, Human Resources is excited to announce the successful launch of a University wide Continuous Improvement (CI) and Change Management (CM) Community of Practice. To further develop institutional CI/CM expertise, the CoP aims to provide a supportive space for those seeking to learn more about CI and CM or, those who are already working on similar initiatives.   

Homewood EAP has made some important updates to their mobile application which will cause the app to be out of service as the update is uploaded to the Apple and Android app stores. They expect the app to be ready and functioning fully by January 22nd, but in the meantime, the mobile app functionality is available fully on homeweb.ca on desktop, tablet, and mobile browser.
