Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey

Smoking status has been defined to be consistent with the definitions used in other national Health Canada surveys that collect data on tobacco use.

Smoking prevalence

The estimated number of smokers in a specified group, divided by the total population of that group, expressed as a percentage; also referred to as the "smoking rate".

Cigarette consumption

The average number of cigarettes reported smoked per day across the past 7 days by either daily or occasional smokers. In this report, consumption is reported only for daily smokers.

Current smoker

Includes daily and non-daily (occasional) smokers. Determined from the response to the question “During the past 30 days, how often did you smoke cigarettes?”

  • Current daily smoker: refers to those who respond "Daily".
  • Current non-daily smoker: often referred to as "occasional" smoker, refers to those who respond "Less than daily, but at least once a week” or “Less than once a week, but at least once in the past month".

​Former smoker

Was not smoking at the time of the survey (“Not at all” to the past 30-day smoking question), but answered "Yes" to the question “Have you smoked at least 100 cigarettes (about 4 packs) in your life?"

Ever-smokers

Current and former smokers combined.

Never-smoker

Either was not smoking at the time of the survey (“Not at all” to past 30-day smoking) and answered "No" to the 100 lifetime cigarettes question, or responded “No” to “Have you ever smoked a whole cigarette?”

Non-smokers

Former smokers and never-smokers combined.

Quitter percentage

The ratio of the number of former smokers in a specified group divided by the number of ever-smokers in that group.

E-cigarette use has been defined as follows:

Ever e-cigarette use

“Yes” to the question “Have you ever tried vaping?”

Past 30-day e-cigarette use

Responded “daily”, “less than daily, but at least once a week”, or “less than once a week, but at least once in the past month” to the question “During the past 30 days, how often did you vape?”

Daily e-cigarette use

Responded “daily” to the question “During the past 30 days, how often did you vape?”

  • Current non-daily smoker: often referred to as "occasional" smoker, refers to those who respond "Occasionally" to the question "At the present time do you smoke cigarettes every day, occasionally or not at all?"

​Former smoker

Was not smoking at the time of the interview, however, answered "YES" to the question "Have you smoked at least 100 cigarettes in your life?"

Ever-smokers

Current and former smokers combined.

Never-smoker

Was not smoking at the time of the interview and answered "NO" to the question "Have you smoked at least 100 cigarettes in your life?"

Non-smokers

Former smokers and never-smokers combined.

Quitter percentage

The ratio of the number of former smokers in a specified group divided by the number of ever-smokers in that group.

E-cigarette use has been defined as follows:

Ever e-cigarette use

“Yes” to the question “Have you ever tried vaping?”

Past 30-day e-cigarette use

Responded “yes” to “In the past 30 days did you use an electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cigarette?” OR “every day” to “At the present time, do you use an electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cigarette every day, occasionally or not at all?”

Daily e-cigarette use

Responded "every day" to the question "At the present time, do you use an electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cigarette every day, occasionally or not at all?” OR “yes” to “During the past 30 days, did you use an electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cigarette every day?”

Current smoker

Has smoked at least 100 cigarettes in his/her lifetime and has smoked at least one whole cigarette during the past 30 days; includes daily and non-daily smokers.

  • Current daily smoker: a current smoker who has smoked at least one cigarette per day for each of the 30 days preceding the survey.
  • Current non-daily smoker: a current smoker who has smoked at least one cigarette during the past 30 days, but has not smoked every day.

Former smoker

Smoked at least 100 cigarettes in his/her lifetime and has not smoked at all during the past 30 days.

EXPERIMENTAL SMOKER (BEGINNER)

Has smoked at least one whole cigarette, but not 100 or more cigarettes and has smoked in the last 30 days.

FORMER EXPERIMENTAL SMOKER (PAST EXPERIMENTER)

Has smoked at least one whole cigarette, but not 100 or more cigarettes and has not smoked at all in the past 30 days.

PUFFER

Someone who has just tried a few puffs of a cigarette, but has never smoked a whole cigarette.

EVER TRIED A CIGARETTE

Someone who has ever tried a cigarette, even a few puffs.

NEVER TRIED A CIGARETTE

Someone who has never tried a cigarette, not even a few puffs.

SMOKING PREVALENCE

The estimated number of smokers in a specified group, divided by the total population of that group, expressed as a percentage.

CIGARETTE CONSUMPTION

The average number of cigarettes smoked per day across the 7 days by daily smokers.

EVER E-CIGARETTE USE

  • 2018-19: when asked, “In the last 30 days, did you use any of the following?” responded “Daily or almost daily”, “Less than daily, but at least once week”, “Less than weekly, but at least once in the last 30 days”, or “Tried, but did not use in the last 30 days” to either the item “E-cigarettes (vape, vape pen, tank & mod) with nicotine” or the item “E-cigarettes (vape, vape pen, tank & mod) without nicotine”.
  • 2016-17 and 2014-15: when asked, “Have you ever tried any of the following?” responded “yes” to the item “Using e-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes)” (2016-17: “Using e-cigarettes (vaporizers with e-juice, vape pens, tanks, mods)”).

PAST 30-DAY E-CIGARETTE USE

  • 2018-19: when asked, “In the last 30 days, did you use any of the following?” responded “Daily or almost daily”, “Less than daily, but at least once week”, or “Less than weekly, but at least once in the last 30 days” to either the item “E-cigarettes (vape, vape pen, tank & mod) with nicotine” or the item “E-cigarettes (vape, vape pen, tank & mod) without nicotine”.
  • 2016-17 and 2014-15: when asked, “In the last 30 days, did you use any of the following?” responded “yes” to the item “E-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes)” (2016-17: “E-cigarettes (vaporizers with e-juice, vape pens, tanks, mods)”.

DAILY OR ALMOST DAILY E-CIGARETTE USE

  • 2018-19: when asked, “In the last 30 days, did you use any of the following?”, responded “Daily or almost daily” to either the item “E-cigarettes (vape, vape pen, tank & mod) with nicotine” or the item “E-cigarettes (vape, vape pen, tank & mod) without nicotine”.
