The percentage of ever e-cigarette users who were current smokers varied significantly by age group,120 and was lowest among youth aged 15-19, increasing with age (Figure 11.25). Among younger age groups, never smokers comprised the vast majority of ever e-cigarette users: 86.9%a of those aged 15-19, and 70.3%b of those aged 20-24. However, never smokers comprised a minority of ever e-cigarette users aged 25 and older.
Among past 30-day users, the percentage who were current smokers also varied significantly by age, although age groups were combined for reporting.121 A similar pattern of a greater percentage of current smokers with increasing age held among past 30-day users (Figure 11.26). Never smokers also comprised a majority of past 30-day e-cigarette users aged 15-19 (74.0%c) and aged 20-24 (54.1%d), although by a smaller margin than among ever users, and comprised a small minority of past 30-day users aged 25 and older.
Among daily e-cigarette users, the percentage who were current smokers was 25.8%e among 15- to 24-year-olds, but not reportable among those aged 25 and older. However, the percentages of daily e-cigarette users who were never smokers or former smokers varied significantly by age group.122,123 Among daily e-cigarette users aged 15-24, over half (52.0%f) were never smokers, and 22.2%g were former smokers. In contrast, among daily users aged 25 and older, nearly three-quarters (72.0%h) were former smokers, and very few were never smokers.
