The music for this concert is a collection of enchanting and beautiful compositions from all over Europe and England. The incomparable Beethoven wakes us to the evils of politics, dishonesty, and murder in his dramatic overture to Coriolan. A fitting overture for an election year...
The movie music of Morricone is lovely and tragic at once, adeptly transmitting the joys and sorrows of hardship and friendship through the lens of loss. Bartok gives us a Hungarian take on the folk music of Romania in a rugged and raucous music of the people. Debussy's "Petite Suite" is some of his most charming piano music set for full orchestra by the great orchestrator Henri Busser - guaranteed - a virtual transport to France and all it's beauty. Across the channel to England and the bucolic vision of the "Banks of Green Willow" show beauty of the English countryside and the leisurely pace and contentment of it's inhabitants. Finally, Haydn takes us to the bustle of London - a place that he loved and where he was loved. His masterpiece conjures even the bells of Big Ben in the finale.
