Social Anxiety in the Classroom [Inclusive Instruction Series] (CTE1264)

Monday, March 1, 2021 8:30 am - Wednesday, March 31, 2021 11:59 pm EST (GMT -05:00)
Location: Online (LEARN)
Facilitator: Kristen Archbell (CTE) and Emma Green (CTE)

Workshop description

Social anxiety is becoming increasingly more common among students in higher education. Students who experience heightened social anxiety are at risk for a host of negative academic outcomes, including lower student engagement, satisfaction, sense of connectedness, and grades, and higher rates of attrition. As a Teaching Assistant (TA), you have the ability to support students who experience social anxiety through a variety of pedagogical approaches. During this module, we will discuss teaching strategies that you can incorporate into your role as a TA, barriers you may face, and we will consider how the COVID-19 pandemic may impact social connections among all students. By the end of this module, you will have developed a toolkit of strategies to help support the learning of students with social anxiety, which can be implemented into your role as a TA!

Module delivery

Although this module is scheduled over a period of several weeks, it is not a multi-day workshop. The content and expected effort are approximately equivalent to 2-3 hours, but spread over a longer timeframe so that you can move at your own pace.

This online module consists of:

  • a set of asynchronous, self-paced tasks in LEARN, that must be completed by the due date of Wednesday, March 31 by 11:59 p.m.

Registration

  • Registration required (if this is your first time using GoSignMeUp, you will need to set up your acccount first)

  • Participants will receive an attendance credit towards the Fundamentals program if they complete all of the required tasks in the module, including all the module activities.
  • Participants who do not complete all module activities by the due date will have their registration in the workshop cancelled, and will need to register again the following month.
