Description

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Miniseries is a five-part series (i.e., workshops, presentations) intended to support instructors who are interested in pursuing teaching and learning research. Throughout the Miniseries, participants will be provided with the tools, resources, colleagues’ experiences with SoTL, and opportunities for collaborations to get people started on their own research. The theme of the SoTL Miniseries is “teaching and learning problems”. We will work towards appreciating when we experience problems in how we teach and/or how our students learn, and begin conceptualizing these problems as opportunities for evidence-based research.

Taking place every three weeks in the fall 2021 term, participants will engage with one another, the facilitators, and guest presenters to understand what goes into conducting research on teaching and learning. Participants will be given a workbook to record their thoughts and reflections in throughout the SoTL Miniseries. Each part of the SoTL Miniseries has a distinct theme:

  • Part 1 (Thursday, September 16 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.) – An introduction into the scholarship of teaching and learning and discussing “problems” in teaching and learning
  • Part 2 (Thursday, October 7 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.) – Hearing from colleagues at the University of Waterloo who have conducted their own teaching and learning research and what problems they tried to solve
  • Part 3 (Thursday, October 28 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.) – Journal Club style discussion where we read a SoTL article in advance and discuss its implications for our work
  • Part 4 (Thursday, November 18 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.) – Hearing from additional colleagues at the University of Waterloo who have conducted their own teaching and learning research and what problems they tried to solve
  • Part 5 (Thursday, December 9 from 2:00 pm- 3:00 p.m.) – Designing and collaborating on your own potential SoTL research project

Due to the SoTL Miniseries enrollment being capped in order to encourage community-building with a small cohort of instructors, participants are asked to attend all five parts of the series.
