An article on Extended Reality (XR) technologies in higher education has just been published by staff from three different Waterloo units. Gillian Dabowski (Centre for Extended Learning), Amna Idrees (Systems Design Engineering), and Mark Morton (Centre for Teaching Excellence) published "Advancing Extended Reality Teaching and Learning Opportunities Across the Disciplines in Higher Education" in Xplore after presenting at the 2022 International Conference of the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN).

Their study explores the benefits and challenges of XR technologies for teaching and learning, and reviews XR pedagogical initiatives at three universities, including the University of Waterloo. The research aims to discern strategies to promote and support XR initiatives in higher education, develop best practices for using and integrating XR technologies into university courses, and guide future research into XR technologies in higher education.

A video presentation of the session is available. The project was supported by funding from the D2L Innovation Guild.

Waterloo also has a Community of Practice devoted to XR technologies which everyone is welcome to join.
