Admission/enrolment decision for PSYCH 465

Students will be selected based on resumes, references, academic standing, and our ability to match students with appropriate apprenticeships.

We try to place students in one of their top choices for an apprenticeship setting and encourage you to list all of the settings that would meet your goals for the apprenticeship on your application form. If we cannot place you appropriately according to your stated preferences for PSYCH 465 placement or further clarification is needed about your request, the Course Coordinator will consult with you prior to placing you in a setting that was not listed among your preferences.

We hope to make ‘tentative’ admission decisions for PSYCH 465 based on a review of the resumes, references, and academic standing of the applicants by the middle of October 2014. Those tentatively accepted will be enrolled for PSYCH 465 (see enrolment conditions below).

Given that apprenticeship positions won't be confirmed until later in the Fall term, students will be allowed to enrol in six courses (3.0 units) for Winter 2015 (including PSYCH 465) so long as their overall average is at least 75% after Spring 2014. Once your placement has been confirmed in late November the sixth course will be dropped. For those intending to enrol in six courses (3.0 units) Winter 2015, your overall average will be reviewed in early January once your Fall grades are available. If you do not have a 75% overall average at that time, you are not eligible to enrol in six courses and you must drop a course (other than PSYCH 465). Students who are formally accepted into PSYCH 465 will be enrolled by the Psychology Undergraduate Advisors.

Enrolment in PSYCH 465 cannot be official until the matches are made of students to apprenticeship settings/supervisors which likely won’t be completed until late November. Applicants will be contacted with information regarding a potential apprenticeship match. Applicants will be required to confirm their acceptance of the offer (likely within 72 hours). Those who decline the offer will not be offered an alternate choice.

We will do our best to secure apprenticeship settings for all of those who are tentatively accepted to PSYCH 465. However, placement is not guaranteed because apprenticeship positions are limited by the number of commitments received from supervisors to take on apprenticeship students and the timing of when those commitments can be made. Those without placements will be required to drop PSYCH 465.

Course drop deadline

The normal course drop deadline windows and associated penalties apply to PSYCH 465.  However, we expect that all applicants are fully committed to the obligations of this course and that nobody who is officially accepted to PSYCH 465 will drop the course beyond the first week of the ten week placement. Apprenticeship supervisors count on and value the contribution of student volunteers, and the continued success of this course depends on the reliability and responsiveness of the students within the work setting.
