Motivation-cognition interactions in aging

Head shot of Dr. Julia Spaniol
Normal aging is characterized by cognitive and affective changes as well as changes in personality and goal orientation. Within the field of cognitive aging research, interest in motivation-cognition interactions has grown dramatically in the past 20 years. In this talk I will present a series of studies from my lab that have examined mechanisms of motivation-cognition interaction across several domains (memory, prospection, attention, and decision making). I will use these examples to highlight the strengths and limitations of the motivation-cognition interaction framework, and to discuss its broader significance for contemporary views of aging.
