Student portal app comes to Arts

Monday, September 29, 2014

UWaterloo’s student portal is launching with the Faculty of Arts this term. The portal will provide undergraduate and graduate students with a mobile-friendly communication tool that delivers the UWaterloo information they need, just when they need it.

The portal pulls relevant academic, career and social information from campus resources to deliver customized information to each student. It currently provides everything from class schedules, required textbooks, faculty and department events to daily specials in campus food outlets,

plus much more. Time-sensitive messages generated by Registrar’s Office, Graduate Studies Office and Student Accounts remind students about important deadlines. And this is just the beginning. Over time, more content will be added, as well as allowing staff to send targeted messages to groups of students.

This week Arts first-year undergraduate students were the first group to be invited to access the portal. Departments, or groups of departments, will be rolled in throughout the fall term. Department staff will be notified by the Student Success Office in advance of their department’s turn. The tentative schedule can be viewed online.

Staff and faculty can support the portal in two ways: add news and events to your WCMS websites to generate dynamic content for the portal and encourage students to use the portal.

The Student Success Office and IST have developed the portal based on extensive consultations with students and campus partners. Faculty of Environment students tested the portal this summer, and feedback and student interest has been positive. Ongoing student feedback will be critical to help evolve the portal as a valuable tool for all UWaterloo students.

Questions can be directed to the student portal team.
