Research
Susan (Sue) Shaw is a Sociologist who worked at Dalhousie University and the University of Waterloo prior to her retirement in 2011. Her research has focused primarily on issues related to gender equity and social justice. She has given particular attention to the intersection of work, family, and leisure; the changing nature of gender and parenting ideologies; the ways in which work and family environments affect leisure opportunities; and the implications of leisure for social and cultural change. She has published in a wide variety of academic journals and has presented her research at academic, professional, and community-based conferences and workshops. She has co-authored and co-edited several books, including Both Gains and Gaps: Feminist Perspectives on Women's Leisure (1999) and A Handbook of Leisure Studies (2006). Her most recent book, Women, Leisure, and Gender, with Val Freysinger, Karla Henderson, and Deb Bialeschki, will be published in 2012.
Sue is Past Chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Waterloo, Past President of the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies, and Past President of the Academy of Leisure Sciences. She has received numerous awards including the Allen V. Sapora Research Award (1993), and the National Parks and Recreation Association's Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt Research Excellence Award (1999). In 2011 she received the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Status of Women Committee Award of Distinction for her contributions to the advancement of women in Ontario universities.
