Expand your studies with an international experience

In today’s growing global community, it is more important than ever to experience other cultures, ideas and values. Going on an international experience is a great way to see the world, broaden your horizons and gain valuable experience and skills.

As an Arts student, you can:

International Exchange

Arts students who go on exchange:

  • Broaden their world view and experience the subjects they study first-hand
  • Enhance their cultural understanding and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Learn how to be adaptable and innovative in today's globalized world
  • Earn credit towards their UW degree!

Funding your experience

  • When away one exchange, you will study at another school but still pay tuition to and earn credit at UWaterloo.
  • You are eligible for OSAP and other forms of financial assistance while on exchange.
  • You are responsible for covering application, travel, and living costs, which vary by country. To help you calculate how much your exchange might cost please review living and housing expense details found under each partner universities' program page.
  • Scholarships and bursaries available for International Experiences:
    • President's International Experience Award: If you received the UWaterloo President's Scholarship of Distinction Award when admitted to the university, you may be able to claim the President's International Experience Award, worth $1,500.
    • Arts International Experience Award: Several awards, valued at $1,000 each, are available annually to full-time Arts undergraduate students (excluding Accounting and Financial Management) who are planning to travel abroad to enhance their learning experience.
    • Arts International Exchange/Study Abroad Award: Five awards, valued at $1,000 each, are provided annually to assist Arts undergraduate students enrolled who are participating in an exchange or study abroad program at an overseas institution.  
    • JR Coutts International Experience Awards: Several awards, valued at $1,500 to $2,500 each, are available annually to undergraduate Arts students who wish to participate in an international experience.
    • Ron Eydt Travel Award: Several awards, valued from $500-$2,500, are available annually to undergraduate students who participate in one of the approved full-time exchange programs.
    • David Johnston International Experience Awards: Several awards, worth $2,500 to $5,000, are provided annually to full-time undergraduate and graduate students who wish to participate in an international experience.

**New** Mandatory information sessions

Students who are interested in participating in an exchange or study abroad program in the 2019/2020 academic year, will will be required to attend an information session before they can apply. Please see the Go Abroad website for upcoming dates and times.
