Project Summary
The implementation of a competency-based assessment in higher education intends to enhance student learning and engagement and improve teaching practices. This approach emphasizes the development of key competencies, skills, and knowledge, relevant to future careers and post-graduation life. The project will investigate the effectiveness of implementing competency-based assessment and learning in a first-year core course for four engineering programs. About three-hundred and fifty students will be affected by this project. The course will be redesigned to include assessments based on competencies of the course learning outcomes. The assessments are designed to allow students to take ownership in their learning experience. The project will evaluate the efficacy of this method on student learning and engagement. It will also evaluate student retention of knowledge which help fosters deep student learning.
