Building Classroom Community (CTE764)

Tuesday, October 4, 2016 1:15 pm - 2:45 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Location: EV1 241 (See below)  Notes: Open to faculty and staff(registration is required)

Large undergraduate classes present challenges for students and instructors alike.   In these settings, students can feel anonymous, passive, and isolated from one another and from their instructor. When students interact with one another and with their instructor, they have the opportunity to make acquaintances and friends, which is the first step to developing a sense of community. Feeling part of a classroom community is associated with a sense of belonging, increased motivation for learning, development of social support, and greater enjoyment of class. Instructors have an opportunity to foster a sense of community in their classroom. In this session instructors will learn community-building strategies that promote student-to-student interaction, student-to-instructor interaction, and student-to-content interaction in the classroom.

Please bring your laptop, tablet, phone to this session.

Facilitator: Christine Zaza, CTE, and Mary Power, CTE
