Workshop description

The educational benefits of peer review have been expressed by several researchers (Nicol, Thomson, and Breslin 2014; Orsmond, Merry, and Callaghan 2004; Searby and Ewers 1997; Sluijsmans, Brand-Gruwel, and Van Merrienboer 2002; Sluijsmans, Docky, and Moerkerke 1999).  Additionally, several instructors here at University of Waterloo have incorporated peer review in their courses (Pinheiro, BIOL 110; Lollel, BIOL 225; Spafford & Bright, OPTOM 360; Geobey, ENBUS 612 & INDEV 308). For the first half of this workshop, we will explore some of the virtues of student-to-student peer review, share some examples of how it has been done here at UWaterloo and highlight some recommended practices. For the second half of the session we will provide an overview of some online tools that can be used to help with the logistical aspects of peer review.

Learning outcomes:

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • identify several learning benefits that may be realized by students with the integration of student-to-student peer review in a course
  • illustrate and share with other colleagues some examples of how peer review is used at UWaterloo
  • explain some recommended practices with respect to incorporating peer review within a course
  • compare and contrast the pros and cons of a few online peer review tools
